Broadway Stages, New York City’s premier film and television production facility, has built the first solar powered soundstage in America while building the largest privately-placed solar power array in the state of New York. John Salmon, the Director of Business Development for Solar Energy Systems (SES) stated that “…the solar initiative at Broadway Stages allows it to offset 822,000 lbs of CO2 emissions, which is the equivalent of planting over 8500 street trees in this community”. This solar energy project, conceived by Broadway Stages’s founder Tony Argento and Broadway Stages’s President Gina Argento, was conceptualized through combined efforts with Chris Timbrell from Greenpoint Energy Partners. With the help of local Brooklyn Solar Energy Systems LLC, a Brooklyn based solar power integrator for commercial solar energy, and New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). Far from being done, Broadway Stages is currently in further discussion with SES to design and create additional add-ons to their existing facilities to fully take advantage of renewable resources in New York City.

Solar Energy Systems, LLC (SES), is a leading integrator of commercial solar electric systems in the Northeastern United States. SES finances, designs, engineers and builds solar photovoltaic (PV) installations utilizing licensed tradespersons. SES is headquartered in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn. Since 2010, SES partnered with Broadway Stages to build over 1mW of solar PV on several film production buildings owned by Tony and Gina Argento.

According to SES, “Broadway Stages’ annual solar generation exceeds 1,200,000kWh each year. Solar offsets over 25% of the total electric consumption at Broadway Stages. For perspective, the average single family home consumes 8,000kWh per year, so the Stages’ arrays would power over 140 houses. Broadway Stages is looking to deploy additional solar PV capacity at several properties in the coming year.”
